They called him the "Builder King." History should remember him as one of humanity's greatest monsters. From 1885 to 1908, King Leopold II turned the Congo Free State into a private empire built on terror, extracting "red rubber" with a regime of quotas, hostages, and mutilation enforced by the Force Publique. In chilling detail, The Butcher of Congo uncovers how a benevolent public image masked a genocide that halved a nation's population.
Drawing on newly surfaced documents and survivor testimonies, David G. Stone pieces together the machinery of Leopold's deception—and the bravery of the whistleblowers who fought to expose it. This is not just a history of atrocity; it is a warning about how power launders its crimes when the world looks away.
What you'll discover:
- The brutal methods used to harvest rubber from enslaved communities
- How propaganda, philanthropy, and lobbyists hid a crime in plain sight
- The campaigners who risked careers and lives to force accountability
- Why this genocide faded from curricula—and the echoes in today's conflicts
Meticulously researched and urgently told, this audiobook gives voice to the millions silenced by empire and challenges listeners to confront the legacies of colonialism that still shape our world.
Warning: Contains graphic historical content. Listener discretion advised.
