About this audiobook

A Good Morning America Book Club Pick!

"Ell Potter’s whimsical narration style for this unconventional love story matches the lighthearted and lyrical prose." — Kirkus

In this lush and enchanting novel from New York Times bestselling author Roshani Chokshi, a prince is only as good as his beating heart and a maiden is only as good as her honest word. But when love and the truth become impossibly tangled, the two must figure out how to survive together, or fall completely apart.

To find love is a curse ...

Prince Arris knows that marriage means murder. Thanks to a poorly worded wish to a sea witch, all one needs to rule the Isle of Malys is the heart and hand of the kingdom’s heir. Historically, this has been construed quite literally.

Thus, Arris expects that the day after his marriage and murder he will wake up as a sentient tree alongside the rest of his predecessors. His only chance at a long life is finding true and lasting love. When Arris's parents announce a tournament of brides to compete for his hand and heart, a slew of eligible, lovely and (possibly murderous) bachelorettes make their way to Rathe Castle. Amidst glittering balls in ozorald caves, strolls through menageries of daydream trees and pearl crocodiles, tea time on glass boats and kisses that leave his head spinning, Arris cannot tell who is here out of love for him...or lust for power.

Until he meets Demelza.

As a veritas swan, Demelza’s song wrings out the truth. Forced into hiding, Demelza strikes a deal. Arris will provide her with safekeeping in exchange for her truth-telling song to sort through his potential brides.

While Arris is used to dodging death threats and Demelza is accustomed to fighting for her voice to be heard, to survive the tournament of brides requires a different kind of bravery. And perhaps the bravest thing one can do is not merely protect one’s life, but find the courage to chase a life worth living.

This delightfully morbid romantic fantasy thrilled the goth girl in me. I loved the premise of a girl who joins a prince’s dangerous bride competition to escape being sacrificed by her sorcerer father. I loved the magic, intrigue, friendship, romance, & goofiness. Our veritas swan heroine Demelza & Prince Arris were easy to root for, & other characters are also quirky, fun, & interesting. Beautiful writing & great narration. Recommended for fans of quirky romantic fantasy or T. Kingfisher books.

Thank you to Wednesday Books for the eARC and Macmillan Audio for the ALC. 4.5 stars. The Swan’s Daughter was remarkably cozy, despite how murderous everyone seems to be. Demelza is the daughter of a truth-telling swan and an evil wizard, and her father (who loves her…in his evil way) has discovered that Demelza’s heart is the key to his immortality. So she runs to the one place he’s banned from—the royal castle—where Prince Arris is hosting an event to choose his bride. Which sounds normal, except all the brides want to kill him (it’s just a thing in royal houses I guess?) so Demelza offers her truth-telling skills as a barter for safe haven. Yes, it’s whacky and whimsical. Yes, Arris is a total dope who wants to believe in love and gets distracted by random women kissing him. Yes, both Demelza and Arris are both blind to their own feelings as they begin a friendship. But oh, this story had me hooked and I couldn’t stop listening. The narrator, Ell Potter, did a fabulous job. I love the magical world, how normal it was to have a second life as perhaps a tree after your first mortal one ends. How all the different magical beings just accepted the quirks of the others. How (after the possible brides are narrowed down) sweet the friendships Demelza makes, giving that found family feel. It was fun and ridiculous and sweet, yet it showed that while falling in love may be easy, staying in love is due to choosing your partner and working through anything that may pop up. What a wonderful listen and I’ll be looking for more from this author.

Thank you Macmillan Audio for the free gift! Ell Potter is such a wonderful narrator for stories with that classic fairytale feel. Listening to her made me feel like I was settling in for storytime, and it fit this book perfectly. This really was a beautiful story. What I loved most is how much it leaned into the older style of fairytales, where magic isn’t smoothed down to be pretty, and transformations still come with strange little details. Even though Demelza becomes a girl, she still eats sugared spiders and sleeps in a nest. Even though her father is a monster, his love for her is still complicated and real. It reminded me so strongly of the fairytales I grew up with, the ones that were enchanting but also a little unsettling, and I absolutely loved that. I also appreciated the more modern angle of Demelza choosing herself. It didn’t rely on the idea that the prince must be her first choice just because that’s how these stories usually go. That shift felt refreshing and added a lot to her character arc. This book surprised me, in a good way. It was more layered and more thoughtful than I expected it to be, and I genuinely enjoyed every moment of it, especially with Ell Potter bringing the whole thing to life.
