The Guest Rites: The Inviolable Promise Of Carthule

When a weary Earthman collapses at the doors of a desert temple on Venus, he’s taken in by priests whose devotion to the sacred Guest Rite is absolute. Their kindness is unwavering, their faith unshakable, and their custom clear: a guest must be protected, honored, and sheltered—no matter what he has done. But when a priceless relic disappears from a neighboring temple, suspicion falls on the traveler, and a quiet tension begins to pulse beneath the calm rituals of Carthule.

Robert Silverberg’s “The Guest Rites” is a thoughtful, atmospheric tale that explores faith, obligation, and the sharp edges of hospitality taken to its most literal extreme. As the stranded Earthman grows more desperate to escape the sand-choked world and the watchful eyes of the priests, the story raises a timeless question: what happens when tradition becomes a trap? Silverberg blends gentle humor, alien culture, and an escalating sense of inevitability into one of his most memorable early stories.
