In Robert E. Howard’s “Rogues in the House,” Conan the Cimmerian escapes imprisonment and becomes entangled in a deadly struggle involving the scheming priest Nabonidus, the corrupt noble Murilo, and a terrifying ape-like creature called Thak. Murilo, fearing assassination, seeks Conan’s help in eliminating Nabonidus, but when Conan infiltrates the priest’s mansion, he discovers it is a labyrinth of treachery, hidden passages, and shifting alliances. As the night unfolds, human cunning and brute savagery collide, with Thak emerging as a fearsome force of chaos. The story blends sword-and-sorcery action, suspense, and horror, showing Howard’s gift for pitting ruthless men and primal monsters against one another in a dark, violent contest for survival.
