About this audiobook

In the intertidal plains surrounding Esbjerg, where stagnant water keeps more secrets than the living, a brutal murder shakes southwestern Denmark high society. Two young women are found mutilated. The police act quickly. Too quickly.

Mads Pedersen is arrested and charged with the crimes.

For everyone, the case is closed.

For Agnete Aldrichsen, it isn’t.

Because on the night of the first murder, Mads was with her.

In secret.

In the darkness of a pier, with the sound of water striking the wood and the dangerous sensation of doing something that should never have happened.

Agnete knows Mads’s magnetism. His charm can be dark, even unsettling. But a murderer… no.

When a new body appears, the police speak of an imitator. A copycat. A second predator taking advantage of the chaos.

Agnete, however, feels that something doesn’t fit.

The deeper she digs, the more she discovers that in Esbjerg nothing is what it seems: not the respectable families, not the inherited fortunes, not even her own memories of that night.

And if she’s wrong…

she will have been protecting a monster.

In the intertidal plains surrounding Esbjerg, where stagnant water keeps more secrets than the living, a brutal murder shakes southwestern Denmark high society. Two young women are found mutilated. About the author

The power of stories resonates within me with an almost visceral clarity. Facts and data alone are not enough: we need narratives that pierce the veil of reason and reach the heart, the bones, that ancient knowing we all carry inside. Stories that return us to our essence and awaken us. Perhaps because there are truths we recognize even if we cannot explain them, and stories are the keys that allow us to remember.

For me, writing has also been a form of evolution. Over time, I realized that the more consciously I made decisions in my life, the stronger and more self-sufficient I became. I live and think outside the ordinary, convinced that energy flows toward where the mind is directed. I write to understand myself better, to bring clarity to the past, to situate myself in the present, and to orient myself toward the future, trying to find in that process the brightest moments of this world. As my dear Virginia Woolf would say: «It is a pity not to say what one feels.»

As I write, I discover that deep within, there are truths we sense without knowing how; that is why stories, in some way, help us recognize them. Writing also means dissolving myself in those ancient narratives and looking beyond the past: traversing the moments when I was rejected, hurt, or broken, the places where I suffered and struggled. In the end, all I have done is write, and that act has become an honest and profoundly meaningful labor for me.

Nine years ago, I moved to Denmark, this archipelago of islands, in search of a life more connected to writing. Many of my narratives are born from old legends and traditional tales that I reinterpret in my own way, attempting to keep alive the emotion, the atmosphere of those lands, and the intensity of impossible loves.

Thank you for opening this space. I would love to hear from you and, from my corner of the world, continue weaving my thread into this great tapestry of stories.

With love and deep gratitude,

Rebecca
