Fools and Mules

Snowbound in the high Rockies, Deputy Shorty McKay is given a simple task: deliver a payroll to a remote mining camp before dawn. But when pride outweighs good sense, Shorty refuses the safety of a mule—only to find himself robbed, captured, and riding one anyway... straight into disaster.

Fools and Mules is a classic Western short story packed with winter danger, dry frontier humor, and poetic justice. As avalanches thunder, tempers flare, and survival hangs by a thread, Shorty learns that wisdom doesn’t always come from the smartest horse—or the smartest man—but sometimes from the most stubborn animal on the mountain.

Originally published in 1924, this lively tale blends suspense, comedy, and rugged Western atmosphere, celebrating grit, humility, and the unexpected heroism of a much-maligned mule.

Narrated with warmth and character, Fools and Mules is a fast-paced, entertaining ride through the snowbound frontier—where pride is punished, fools are educated, and mules get the last laugh.
