About this audiobook

Welcome to Successful Houseplants: Care and Propagation, a guide designed to help you flourish as a houseplant enthusiast, regardless of your prior experience. This book is somewhat of a departure from my usual works, which have typically explored historical themes and narratives. However, like many people, I found myself drawn into the world of houseplants during the global pandemic in 2020, when I was forced to adapt to working from home. It was during this time that I decided to give houseplant care another go, having previously tried—and failed—several times to keep my plants alive.

For years, I had struggled with the basics of houseplant care. I had read numerous books, combed through countless articles, and yet, my plants always seemed to meet a rather unfortunate fate. It wasn’t until I delved into the world of online tutorials, particularly on YouTube, that I began to see the light. Surprisingly, it was through these video guides that my knowledge and confidence started to grow—alongside my plants.

As much as I love literature, I found that some of the best and most accessible information came from YouTube, where passionate experts and enthusiasts share their knowledge in a way that’s both engaging and easy to follow. There are far too many brilliant channels to mention them all here, but I would like to give a special shout-out to five that stood out for me. In alphabetical order, they are: Betsy Begonia, Erika Lodes, Garden Tips, Gardening Is My Passion, and Gardening Right Now. These channels may not be the most famous in the gardening world, but I found their content clear, concise, and incredibly useful—an excellent place to start for anyone looking to improve their plant care skills.

After successfully growing, caring for, and even propagating my plants, I felt it was time to share what I’ve learned. Being a good researcher, I knew I could supplement the wisdom of these seasoned plant lovers with my own insights, particularly focusing on 50 of the most common houseplants found in homes across the UK, US, Europe, and beyond.

This book is designed for those just beginning their journey with houseplants, as well as for those who have already started but might be seeking a bit of guidance. If you’ve ventured into this introduction, I’m guessing you might be someone who, like me, has tried and perhaps failed in the past to keep houseplants thriving. If so, I urge you to read on.

In this guide, you’ll find step-by-step advice on how to care for and propagate some of the most popular and beginner-friendly houseplants. You’ll learn that with just a few basic principles, it’s easier than you might think to create a thriving indoor garden. Houseplants add immeasurable value to our wellbeing and the atmosphere of our homes, so why not give it a go? Let this book be your companion as you embark on this rewarding journey, and soon, you too can enjoy the beauty and tranquillity that houseplants bring to your living space.

About the author

From the moment I first opened a history book as a child, I was captivated by the stories of the past: empires rising and falling, extraordinary personalities confronting impossible circumstances, great battles turning upon unexpected decisions, and ordinary people finding themselves caught within events far larger than themselves. History never seemed to me a dry collection of names and dates. It was the greatest collection of human stories ever assembled.

That fascination remained with me throughout my life and eventually found expression in my own writing. My historical books are written particularly with younger readers and newcomers to a subject in mind. Rather than attempting to reproduce the detail and academic depth of specialist histories, I try to provide an accessible doorway into a period, personality or conflict — enough context to understand what happened, why it mattered and, I hope, enough excitement to encourage the reader to discover more for themselves.

Many of my books explore military history, empires, great commanders and the people whose decisions changed the course of events. They are intended for curious younger readers, including pre-higher-education teenagers, while remaining accessible to adults encountering a subject for the first time. My aim is simple: to tell the story clearly without allowing unnecessary detail to overwhelm the adventure, tragedy and humanity that first made history fascinating to me.

Storytelling, however, extends beyond history. My collections of traditional fairy tales have become another important part of my writing. Drawn from different cultures and storytelling traditions, the tales are adapted for modern young readers while attempting to preserve their wonder, humour, adventure and moral purpose. Where older versions sometimes imposed extraordinarily harsh punishments upon their villains, I have often preferred consequences involving repentance, forgiveness, reconciliation or banishment, while retaining enough danger and mischief to make the stories exciting.

Some of these short tales deliberately leave questions unanswered. A fairy tale does not always need to explain everything. A child asking “Why did she do that?” or “Do you think he deserved to be forgiven?” can be part of the purpose of the story. I hope such questions encourage conversations between children and their parents, because the interpretation a parent brings to a tale — and the discussion that follows — may ultimately be more valuable than my own.

Whether writing about a battlefield, an emperor, a legendary hero or an enchanted kingdom, I return to much the same principle: tell a good story, make it accessible, encourage curiosity, and leave the reader wanting to know more.
