Published in 1927, The President’s Daughter is one of the most controversial political memoirs in American history. In the book, Nan Britton recounts her long secret romantic relationship with Warren G. Harding, whom she claimed was the father of her daughter, Elizabeth Ann. The memoir was widely regarded as the first major American political “tell-all” and created a national sensation upon publication.
Nanna Popham Britton (1896–1991) was a secretary who gained notoriety as a mistress of Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States. In 1927 she alleged that her daughter, Elizabeth Ann (1919–2005) had been fathered by Harding while he was serving in the United States Senate. In 2015, Harding’s paternity was finally confirmed by DNA testing.
