When a shocking murder occurs in the home of Angie and David Sheehan, their lives are shattered. Desperate to defend their family, they turn to small-town lawyer Martine Dumont for help, but Martine isn’t just legal counsel—she’s also the mother of Angie’s first love, Julian, a now-successful New York City criminal defense attorney. As Julian and Angie confront their shared past and long-buried guilt from a tragic accident years ago, they must navigate their own culpability and the unresolved feelings between them.

Spanning decades, from the ski slopes of rural Colorado to the streets of pre-9/11 New York City and back again, Kristin Koval’s debut novel Penitence is an examination of the complexities of familial loyalty, the journey of redemption, and the profound experience of true forgiveness.

This was a fairly dark, thought provoking, intensely emotional read. It centers around the death of one child in the family by the other child in the family. There was also a previous death that is dealt with in the book that has it's own dark secrets. There are actually multiple secrets going on in this book, past and present. It raises questions as to the ability to forgive such a horrendous act. There was really a ton going on in this book. The theme seems to be that maybe the worst thing we've ever done doesn't define us, but do we deserve forgiveness for that act? I thought this was a great debut novel by this author. I was completely hooked from the very beginning. I listened to the audio narrated by Therese Plummer. She is one of my very favorite narrators and the job she did on this was phenomenal. Thanks to Macmillan Audio for the copy. All thoughts are my own.

This was a great debut novel. It’s a very character driven novel. I was drawn in from the very first page and didn’t want to stop listening. There are two different mysteries intertwined in this one. The current death at Angie and David’s and the story of Angie’s sister from their past. It has its heavy moments but that just made the story even better. I haven’t listened to many books narrated by Therese, but I’ve done a couple back to back and really enjoyed this one. She does a great job portraying all the characters and differentiating among them. Thank you Celadon Books, Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for my copies of this book.
