The Man Without a Temperament: A Classic Literary Short Story of Marriage, Sacrifice, and Emotional Isolation

What if devotion slowly drained the life from the one who gave it? In “The Man Without a Temperament” by Katherine Mansfield, you follow Robert Salesby, a man who has carefully set aside his own desires in order to care for his fragile, demanding wife. In a quiet European hotel meant for rest and recovery, daily routines unfold with delicate precision - meals, walks, silences - each masking an undercurrent of exhaustion and unspoken resentment. As Robert moves through his days with practiced patience, the strain of self-denial begins to surface, revealing the quiet cost of love built on sacrifice alone. Mansfield masterfully exposes the emotional imbalance of marriage, where kindness becomes obligation and tenderness hides despair. With her signature subtlety, she portrays a man whose calm exterior conceals a deep inner emptiness. Press play and step into one of Mansfield’s most quietly devastating stories -where love, duty, and identity blur, and the self slowly disappears.
