The Eclipse of Russia

The Eclipse of Russia is Emile Joseph Dillon’s powerful account of the collapse of the Russian Empire and the forces that led to the Revolution of 1917.

Drawing on decades of firsthand experience, Dillon examines the failures of Tsarist rule, the widening gap between Russia’s intellectual elite and its people, and the political, social, and religious tensions that pushed the nation toward disaster. He offers vivid portraits of key figures such as Count Sergei Witte, Tsar Nicholas II, and Grigori Rasputin, while revealing the diplomatic intrigues and internal conflicts that weakened the empire from within.

More than a history of revolution, The Eclipse of Russia is a penetrating study of power, leadership, national identity, and the consequences of political blindness. Written by one of the most respected foreign observers of Imperial Russia, this classic work provides a unique perspective on the end of an empire and the rise of a new and turbulent era.

Essential reading for anyone interested in Russian history, the Romanov dynasty, the Russian Revolution, and the origins of the Soviet state.
