In the gray routines of London life, two quietly unhappy wives—Rose Arbuthnot and Lotty Wilkins—discover a small advertisement that promises something almost magical: a month in a medieval Italian castle overlooking the sea. Desperate for a breath of beauty and freedom, they decide to seize the chance. But the cost is daunting, so they invite two very different companions to share the venture: the dazzling yet guarded Lady Caroline Dester and the stern, uncompromising Mrs. Fisher.
Thrown together in the sun-drenched splendor of the Italian Riviera, the four women begin their journey as strangers with little in common. Their early days are strained with awkwardness and misunderstanding. Yet the spell of the castle—its terraces of flowers, its warm Mediterranean light, and the quiet magic of San Salvatore—slowly works its transformation. Bit by bit, defenses soften, hearts open, and unexpected friendships begin to bloom.
Written in a rented castle in Portofino and first published in 1922, The Enchanted April was an instant literary success, praised for its vivid charm and sparkling humor. As The Nation and Athenaeum observed, “The beauty of San Salvatore is kept constantly before us with the greatest skill, and the humour of the author has never been more delightful.” Brimming with wit, warmth, and gentle insight, this timeless story invites modern listeners into a world where sunshine, courage, and companionship can quietly change everything.
