The Unlikely Doctor: From Gang Life and Prison to Becoming a Doctor at 56 – the Incredible Story of Dr Timoti Te Moke

Dr Timoti Te Moke is a house doctor working at Middlemore and Auckland City hospitals in New Zealand. He became a doctor at age 56, but it wasn't an easy road to get into medical school. Before embarking on his medical training, he endured a childhood filled with abuse, time in state care, in prison and eventually in gangs. Te Moke details his journey in his memoir, The Unlikely Doctor (2025), which he says he wrote to shine a light on the barriers holding back disadvantaged Kiwis from reaching their potential. This became a #1 New Zealand bestseller upon release in print.
