HVAC Design vs Actual Operation: The Performance Gap

In the world of HVAC engineering, design excellence is often celebrated as the cornerstone of high-performing buildings. Sophisticated load calculations, advanced simulations, and compliance with international standards all contribute to systems that, on paper, promise optimal comfort, energy efficiency, and reliability. Yet, once these systems are installed and begin operating, a different reality frequently emerges—one where performance falls short of expectations. This discrepancy is known as the performance gap.

This book, HVAC Design vs Actual Operation: The Performance Gap, explores the critical divide between theoretical design intent and real-world operation. It is written from the perspective of decades of practical experience across a wide range of projects—datacenters, hospitals, laboratories, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities—where the same pattern continues to repeat: well-designed systems that fail to deliver their intended outcomes.
