About this audiobook

The first book of an epic progression fantasy series inspired by Scandinavian folklore, The Witcher, and Dungeons & Dragons, where a young man named Hallik has been training his whole life to become a magic-wielder, or Grimnir, to keep his island safe. But when monsters breach the shield protecting his realm, Hallik must venture into the mystical cave of Vanalf to hone his skills to protect everything he holds dear.

Hallik has been training his whole life to become a Grimnir, a magic-wielder who can aid in keeping their island safe from the monster hordes outside the shield protecting them. Hundreds of years ago, Grimnirs created a shield around their island. Hallik has waited his whole life to become one of the elite Grimnir who can keep their enemies at bay.

But when monsters start showing up on the island, it appears they aren’t as safe as they thought. They’ll need more Grimnirs to ensure their safety, but to become a magic-wielder, they’ll need to traverse the depths of Vanalf, a cave system that connects the realms, making it the most dangerous place imaginable. Fortunately, there’s one ragtag crew that’s up to the task.

An epic progression fantasy inspired by Scandinavian folklore, The Witcher, and Dungeons & Dragons, Depths of Vanalf is the first in an epic series that will leave you spellbound.

The audiobook has multiple narrators, but they do not speak in turn. Each chapter is read by one narrator based on the POV of that particular chapter. The story had massive potential but failed to grasp any of it and leaves much to be desired as book 1 ends. I don't want to spoil the story for any who want to try it, but I can say that there is very little in this book that stands out and drives the desire to continue on.

Brady Hunsaker’s debut installment of Depths of Vanalf, a fantasy novel that sets the bar for the series. It delivers a flowing narrative, dynamic characters, and high-stakes action. If you are looking for a book with relentless forward momentum, look no further. The story never drags, effortlessly transitioning between moments of quiet character reflection and explosive action. Hunsaker builds characters defined by their internal conflicts and their relationships with one another. The humor is often sarcastic, but always grounded in the tension of the scene. It serves to deepen the bonds between the characters and allows the reader to breathe before the next major conflict erupts. Depths of Vanalf achieves the ideal balance of action and character work. The novel introduces a fascinating world and dynamic cast you immediately invest in. I finished the last page desperate to know what happens next. This is a highly recommended must-read.

I really enjoyed it and the different voice actor for every main character really made it come alive for me
