A Crown of Straw

A Crown of Straw by Allen Upward is a thought-provoking and poetic exploration of ambition, morality, and the fragile nature of human ideals. Written with the eloquence and intellectual vigor characteristic of Upward’s style, the book examines how dreams and desires—no matter how noble—can wither under the weight of pride, politics, and disillusionment.

Through philosophical reflection and sharp social commentary, Upward presents a symbolic “crown of straw” —a powerful metaphor for hollow triumphs and fleeting glory. The narrative unfolds with psychological depth and literary grace, questioning the value of success built on illusion and the pursuit of recognition over truth.

A Crown of Straw is more than a story—it is a mirror held up to human nature. Combining realism with allegory, Allen Upward crafts a profound work that challenges readers to reconsider what truly gives life meaning and purpose. A timeless classic for lovers of introspective and intellectually rich literature.
