The Sodder Children: West Virginia's Christmas Eve Fire and Five Children Who Vanished

Christmas Eve, 1945: the Sodder family shares one last quiet evening. By dawn, their house is ash and five children are gone without a trace.

George and Jennie Sodder never got an answer. Not from the fire marshal who ruled it accidental within weeks. Not from J. Edgar Hoover, who wrote back personally, then closed the door. Not from the private investigator who found a threat, a missing ladder, a severed phone line, and a fire chief who buried a secret box for years.

For 44 years, a billboard on Route 16 asked West Virginia a question no one could answer. George died in 1969 still asking it. Jennie kept the sign up until 1989. Their youngest daughter carried the search into the 21st century, until her own death in 2021 -still without an answer.

This book hands you no tidy solution. Every threat, sighting, and buried piece of evidence is sourced and dated, so you can decide for yourself what happened on that Appalachian hillside 80 years ago.
