About this audiobook

"Alex Jennings' impeccable accent keeps the already propulsive novel quite engaging, and moving like a steam train about to run you over."—Vulture

"Narrator Alex Jennings offers a sparkling performance, providing layered character portraits and enlivening the story with British, American, and Greek accents...listeners who enjoy whodunits and closed-circle mysteries will want to pick this one up."—Library Journal

"Jennings confidently, confidentially embodies [the ensemble]: elegant Lara, gruff Jason, earnest Leo, biting Kate, protective Agathi, unassuming Nikos. Elliott, of course, gets star billing . . . and Jennings ensures his twists, pivots, and falsehoods are marvelously played out to the didn’t-see-that-coming final scene. The please oh-please pièce de resistance would be to put Jennings on screen in the inevitable celluloid adaptation to come."—Booklist

A masterfully paced thriller about a reclusive ex–movie star and her famous friends whose spontaneous trip to a private Greek island is upended by a murder — from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient

This is a tale of murder.

Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it?

Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex–movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

I tell you this because you may think you know this story. You probably read about it at the time ― it caused a real stir in the tabloids, if you remember. It had all the necessary ingredients for a press sensation: a celebrity; a private island cut off by the wind...and a murder.

We found ourselves trapped there overnight. Our old friendships concealed hatred and a desire for revenge. What followed was a game of cat and mouse ― a battle of wits, full of twists and turns, building to an unforgettable climax. The night ended in violence and death, as one of us was found murdered.

But who am I?

My name is Elliot Chase, and I’m going to tell you a story unlike any you’ve ever heard.

A Macmillan Audio production from Celadon Books.

2.5 I'll be completely honest... I have no clue what happened here. I loved all the authors previous books, so this is honestly a huge surprise for me to not love this one too. I felt like from the beginning I didn't care for the characters. I didn't love the narration method with Elliot, and I felt like it was a bit messy. At first, I was intrigued with the messiness and use of breaking the fourth wall, but then I got annoyed with it LOL. I got a lot of whiplash in this book because things were all over the place, which I 100% believe some people are going to love. Personally, the entire story didn't seem intriguing enough and the motives were bland to me. I don't mind unlikeable characters, especially in a thriller, but I felt like these characters just didn't do it for me. I did find it a little hard to follow along with as well. Overall, I think my main issue with the book was the storytelling. I've loved the authors ability to tell a story in the past, but this one just seemed like it was trying to do too much and was doing a lot of the reveals for the shock factor. The characters were not mature at all and the lack of development in any of the characters wasn't a good time for me. I'm going to write this one off as a "not for me" and hope the next one is better! I'm so sure this book will have its audience, unfortunately it just wasn't me this time.

My first take is that this story reminds me so much of the movie Clue (based on the board game). It's a total whodunnit. You know that a murder takes place and the story reveals what happened but you never really know until the end. For an audiobook, I thought this was a fun listening experience. The narrator really brought Elliot Chase to life.

The voice actor was great. He made the long, drawn out story more interesting and easier to listen to. A great combo!
