About this audiobook

“Dylan Reilly Fitzpatrick and Leela Bassuk's thoughtful pacing and tonal control make the dual points of view and timeline transitions smooth and engaging while ensuring that the worldbuilding is immersive and easy to follow.”— Kirkus Reviews

In the great walled city of Isara, political turmoil ignites a rebellion one hundred years in the making. But when a legionnaire falls in love with a Magistrate's daughter, their love will threaten the fate of the city and the will of the gods.

Luca Matius has one purpose—to carry on the family name, maintaining its presence in the Forum once his powerful and cruel uncle dies. But his noviceship with the city's Philosopher places him in the middle of a catastrophe that will alter the destiny of his people.

Maris Casperia was raised amidst the strategic maneuvers of the Citadel's inner workings, and she knows what her future holds—a lifetime of service to a corrupt city. But her years of serving as a novice to the last Priestess who possesses the stolen magic of the Old War has made her envision a different kind of future for the city. When she meets Luca, a fated chain of events is set into motion that will divinely entangle their lives.

As a secret comes to light and throws the city into chaos, Luca and Maris hatch a plot to create a calculated alliance that could tip the scales of power. But when an execution forces Luca to become the symbol of rebellion, he and Maris are thrown onto opposite sides of a holy war. As their fates diverge, they learn they are at the center of a story the gods are writing. And even if they can find their way back to each other, there may be nothing left.

Written by Adrienne Young Narrated by Dylan Reilly Fitzpatrick & Leela Bassuk Fallen City Duology, Book 1 Adult • Romantasy 416 Pages 🗓️ November 4 🖤star crossed lovers 🖤secret relationship 🖤dual timeline 🖤political intrigue 🖤touched by the Gods Theo. That’s the review. Joking. And no, he’s not our MMC but someone who somehow, someway became easily my favorite of the group. He is a protector. Quiet and broody, always there for both our MMC and FMC in a “don’t even ask. It’s already done” way… what’s not to like?! And he will follow our FMC to whatever she needs to go because… as I said… protector. I meaaaannnn But alas, I’m not sure we will get our Theo spinoff! A girl can dream, though. I did an immersive reading with this one and I have to report back. It’s where it’s at! These narrators. THESE NARRATORS! You don’t understand how good they are. I’d listen to them read grocery lists for hours. That’s how good they are. Now, let me just say this really quick before I depart: THAT ENDING! Yeeeeeeesss. I need strong Maris to take over book 2. And I don’t want to even look at you. You know who you are. I won’t spoil things. But YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE character I shall not name.

Thank you Saturday Books and Macmillan Audio for the free gifts! This story completely swept me away. I loved the Ancient Roman–inspired setting. It’s a backdrop I never tire of in fantasy, and Adrienne Young used it so beautifully to create a world brimming with political intrigue, divine influence, and rebellion. The atmosphere was lush and immersive, and the magic system was fascinating; I can’t wait to see how it develops in the next book. Maris and Luca were both incredible characters. Their relationship and individual arcs were so well-crafted, and the alternating timeline between “before” and “now” added such a perfect layer of tension and emotional depth. I was totally absorbed in watching their story unfold piece by piece. Dylan Reilly Fitzpatrick and Leela Bassuk were excellent narrators. I really appreciated how natural their performances felt. They kept each character distinct without exaggerated voice changes, which made the listening experience seamless and engrossing. This was a beautifully told, politically charged, and emotionally gripping story, and I’m so frustrated (in the best way) that I have to wait for the next installment. It’s one of those books that ends and leaves you both satisfied and desperate for more.

This was such an awesome book. I loved the dual timelines that setup where our main characters were and how they ended up. The political intrigue, the romance, the mythology. I really enjoyed this one. I look forward to next installment.
