Kanji Wave is a Wear OS watch face that displays hours, minutes and seconds in Japanese kanji numerals. Inspired by ukiyo-e woodblock prints, its detailed waves frame Mount Fuji, while red kanji stand out against a deep black background.
Created in Italy from a personal love of Japan, it brings Japanese-inspired art and everyday information to your wrist.
TIME IN JAPANESE KANJI
Hours, minutes and seconds appear in kanji numerals, with the date and weekday also displayed in Japanese.
For Japanese speakers, it offers a distinctive way to enjoy a familiar script. For learners, checking the time becomes a small opportunity to practise recognising Japanese numbers. For lovers of Japanese art, it offers a landscape to carry through the day.
THREE LAYERS OF DEPTH
A parallax effect brings depth to the artwork. Foreground waves, background waves and Mount Fuji move on three separate layers, giving the landscape a sense of life.
Choose from monochrome, warm, blue and purple colour palettes.
WEATHER WITHIN THE LANDSCAPE
The weather complication at the top blends into the artwork, making everyday weather information part of the composition.
YOUR STEPS, EXPRESSED THROUGH LIQUID MOTION
A subtle animation with a flowing, liquid effect visually represents the percentage of your daily step goal achieved.
While parallax brings movement to the scenery, this small detail reflects your own activity: your daily progress becomes part of the landscape.
AN ARABIC-NUMERAL TIME REFERENCE
The time-zone complication lets you display an additional time in Arabic numerals. Use it as a reference while becoming familiar with kanji time, or to follow another time zone.
ALWAYS ON: 一日一歩
In Always On mode, the watch face displays “一日一歩” — ichinichi ippo, “one step a day.”
A quiet reminder that small steps matter, connecting the passage of time with your daily progress.
FROM ITALY, WITH ADMIRATION FOR JAPAN
Kanji Wave grew from a personal passion for Japan, within the long cultural friendship between Italy and Japan.
Its waves and Mount Fuji draw inspiration from Hokusai and the landscape tradition also celebrated by Hiroshige. The design pays tribute to the expressive strength of Japanese art, the purity of its lines and the balance between intricate detail and open space. An appreciation for minimalism guides the arrangement of the information, leaving room for the landscape.
As an Italian creator, I wanted to turn that admiration into something you could enjoy every day. My hope is that people in Japan will also find pleasure in this small tribute to an artistic tradition that has brought inspiration far beyond its shores.
